Entertainment Options
Thursday Evening Entertainment:
Poetry Slam at AS220: We will be featuring Taylor Mali, a poet famous for his poem,
and his 1,000 Poets Project. Taylor is the narrator of an upcoming documentary called A Passion to Teach. The documentary started out as a film about extraordinary teachers, but it evolved to include the challenges the field of education is now facing--including high-stakes testing and the privatization of public education. The night will consiste of a short spotlight from our Providence Youth team (currently training for Brave New Voices, a competition you might recognize from the HBO series) and a performance from Taylor, which will include some new and classic poems as well as an opportunity to have a conversation about teaching. It's going to be a pretty special. The show is this Thursday, July 18 at AS220, 115 Empire Street in Providence. Doors open at 8:00, and the cost is $5, benefitting the youth team. Please spread the word to other educators, future educators, and anyone invested in the education of our kids. Oh, and if you want to check out more of Taylor's poems, here is a "Taylor Mali: the teacher's poet" playlist on youtube. ("Tony Steinberg: Brave Seventh-Grade Warrior" made me bawl the first time I heard it . . .)
Hope to see you Thursday! -Megan Thoma Paul Cuffee 12th Grade Humanities Teacher
